Recently retired Oakland County woman wins $1 million lottery prize

LANSING, MI — An Oakland County woman’s retirement is off to a tremendous start after she recently won a $1 million prize playing the Michigan Lottery’s Double Diamond instant game.

“I’ve been playing Double Diamond since it came out and have been very lucky on it, so I had a feeling I would win big,” said the winner, who chose to remain anonymous. “I stopped and purchased some tickets in the morning and then put them in my purse to scratch when I got home later that day.

“I was sitting in my living room scratching my tickets that night, and I scratched this Double Diamond ticket last. When I revealed the $1 million prize, I jumped up and started hollering! I had my husband look the ticket over because I thought I was seeing things.”

The winner bought her ticket at the Shell gas station, located at 24839 Greenfield Road in Southfield. She elected to receive her prize as one-time, lump-sum payment of $693,000, rather than the annuity.

With her winnings, she plans on paying bills and using the rest as a financial cushion for retirement.

The last players from Michigan to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot is the Wolverine FLL lottery club which claimed a $1.05 billion jackpot in March 2021. With their winnings, the group plans to give back to the community.

And while they were lucky winners, it’s smart for players to check their tickets immediately as a winner worth $1 million sold in Warren last year went unclaimed. The money instead went to the state’s School Aid Fund.
