On the day William Jones won $500 in the North Carolina lottery, he decided to grill some steaks for dinner.
The turkey farmer’s appetite ended up helping him win a much bigger prize, lottery officials said.
“I mainly wanted to get some propane to cook some steaks on the grill,” Jones said about his trip to the store, according to lottery officials .
While the Richlands resident was at the Speedway in Beulaville picking up the propane, he bought his second lottery ticket of the day to test his luck and ended up winning $100,000, lottery officials said.
“I tell you what, it was worth the $20,” Jones told lottery officials with a chuckle.
Jones took home $70,016 after taxes, lottery officials said, and has a good idea of how he’ll spend his winnings.
“I think I’ll go ahead and pay for our wedding,” he told lottery officials.
Beulaville is about 70 miles east of Fayetteville.
