Many hefty lottery winnings have been reported from the Hilton Head/ Bluffton area recently. Within the last week alone, there have been two substantial winning tickets sold with combined total winnings of $80,000.

Hilton Head Island and Bluffton have held titles for many things over the years. Most recently Hilton Head Island was named Southern Living’s #1 Best Beach Town for 2022. Bluffton has had its fair share of accolades in recent years, including Expedia’s Most Beautiful Town in South Carolina. Could the title for ‘Most Lottery Winners in the State of South Carolina’ be next for the area in 2022?

The area is certainly off to a great start.

Recently announced, a winning ticket worth $50,000 was sold at the Enmark Station #851 on Bluffton Parkway, a South Carolina Education Lottery news release said. The drawing was held on Monday night and the winning Powerball numbers were 8, 33, 55, 59, 62 and PB 18.

There was no jackpot winner from this drawing. As a result, the new jackpot amount rose to $370 million.

From the same April 18 drawing, two other players had winning tickets worth $500,000 and $100,000; however, they were purchased outside of Beaufort County.

Only a few days ago, it was announced that a college student, who was spending her spring break on Hilton Head Island, became a jackpot winner while on her way back to campus.

The woman was vacationing with friends before she purchased a lottery ticket on the island that ended up winning her $30,000, reported by officials on April 18 in a news release.

As for other local, notable winning tickets sold this year, a $300,000 lottery ticket was sold at the Parkers #61 at 6 Barrel Landing Road in Okatie in January. The winning $10 ticket was sold to a man who purchased a new truck the same day he cashed in his prize.

In February, a winner took home $200,000 after doubling their winnings after purchasing the $1 extra option. The winning ticket, which was purchased at a Blue Water gas station and convenience store on Discovery Drive, was originally set for $100,000 but was doubled after the winner chose to “power up” their ticket.

How to play the lottery

According to the South Carolina Education Lottery, “the lottery offers several terminal generated games: Pick 3 Plus FIREBALL, Pick 4 Plus FIREBALL, CASH POP, Palmetto Cash 5, Mega Millions®, and Powerball®. Players can pick their own numbers or opt for a quick pick and then check their tickets following a scheduled drawing. For these games, prizes must be claimed within 180 days after the draw date on the ticket.”

Each respective game has a location on the website where players can input their numbers to see if they won any prize money.

How to redeem winnings

Winnings may be received in three separate ways.

Lottery winnings from these games with amounts up to and including $500 can be redeemed at any authorized retailer.

Winners who’ve won $100,000 or less may have their prize redeemed by mail. To redeem by mail, the back of the winning ticket must be signed by the winner and a copy of a photo identification card is required for all winnings over $500. Additionally, winnings exceeding $500 must be accompanied by an official lottery claim form and sent to the following address: SC Education Lottery, P.O. Box 11039, Columbia, SC 29211-1039.

Winning tickets of any amount may be redeemed at the Columbia Claims Center. Excluding holidays, the Columbia Claims Center is open from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. on weekdays.
