Cops arrest 50-year-old man for ‘winning lottery ticket’ scam in Kota Tinggi

KOTA TINGGI: A 58-year-old man almost fell victim to a scam after being offered “winning lottery tickets” by a foreigner, claiming to have won a big award.

According to Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Hussin Zamora, one of the methods the suspect used to persuade the victim to purchase lottery tickets was that no identification was necessary to redeem the awards.

“The majority of victims are senior citizens who only realised they had been duped after trying to exchange their prize tickets at the lottery shop,” he said in a statement on Thursday (July 14).

On Wednesday (July 13) around 2pm, the Commercial Crime Investigation Department arrested a 50-year-old man suspected of being involved in the lottery ticket scam criminal case.

The suspect was arrested with the help of the public in Kota Tinggi town while trying to deceive the victim by offering a “winning” lottery ticket.

He also added that the police seized a car, four fake lottery tickets, and a smartphone and that the police are currently searching for the suspect’s friend, who is still on the run.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a whipping, as well as a fine if found guilty.
